The waratah is very suitable as a cut flower owing to its structure, texture, colour and good vase life. In some instances its commercial cultivation has been spectacularly successful; however, it remains a plant that is considered difficult to grow well in cultivation. It has a reputation of being particularly susceptible to root diseases and fertiliser excesses, and as a short-lived garden plant—although it is known that plants can live and flower well for 50+ years.
