Lisianthus grow in the desert but are not a true desert plant as they grow along the edge of creeks and water courses. Rosetting is a natural survival response by the lisianthus to avoid adverse weather conditions of low light intensity, short day length and low night temperature after germinating in the summer (long day length and high temperature at night time). Any stress to the young plant, especially damage to the root, can trigger a rosette response. The plant is trying to ensure its survival.
